Basic Fly Fishing for Beginners

Fly fishing is an angling technique in which a ‘fly’ is used to catch fish. The basics; you’ll catch fish by using a fly reel, fly rod, and a plastic coated line that is much heavier than the traditional monofilament. At the end of the fly line is a leader and tippet, and of course a fly. We’ll start with learning a unique casting method which is different from fresh water casting- the “double haul” is very important when casting into the wind. These techniques are easily learned with a little practice, patience, and of course, the right teacher! Capt. Brian has had anglers of all ages, including young children, master the techniques needed to land a fish and have a great day. Fly fishermen use hand tied flies to catch fish. For fly fishing in saltwater, we will be imitating crabs, shrimp, a worm (in some cases), and small bait fish. Flies will vary according to area and the species of fish we target but don’t worry- we provide all the fly fishing gear and flies you will need to help you catch your fish.

Everyone talks about catching a Tarpon on the fly rod as the pinnacle of success. These are migratory fish that are also called Silver Kings. Some females weigh up to 250 pounds, can be up to eight feet in length, and require a lot of skill to actually land one. These fish can survive for over 50 years, and because of the catch and release programs in place for this game fish, their population is growing.

We have many species to target all year round including bonefish, redfish, and snook to name a few. After a morning of lessons and practice on some real fish you’ll be “hooked” on this sport.
