If you love to catch different species that are unique as well as rare, Islamorada is a great place to start. Before you book your next saltwater fly fishing adventure, talk with me about what is hot, what is biting, and be specific about your goals. There are fishing opportunities all year round; some of the best saltwater fly fishing is when you would least expect it.

Fly fishing often conjures up the view of smooth flowing rivers or mountain creeks that run down stream, flowing through rapids to deep pools. It also promotes the image of the streams where the anglers wait for the rise. Your first catch may be a trout or salmon leaping up to eat your fly. Most of the time when people hear the term fly fishing; they rarely get an idea about fishing in the ocean.

Saltwater fly fishing has managed to capture tremendous popularity across the globe and is now becoming a favorite activity for serious anglers.

There are certain things that you should take into consideration while preparing for a trip. If you are new to this type of fishing, then you should be aware of several tips to make your experience more successful. Often saltwater species require heavier tackle. If you normally fish a 3 wt and expect to cast an 11 wt all day be sure to practice. We also deal with a lot of wind, so you will need to know the “double haul” method of casting, but if you don’t know it already, I will be glad to teach you! There are plenty of fish to practice on once you are here but you want to be as accurate as possible when the school of Tarpon is heading your way, inches can make a difference. So practice and practice some more. Oh by the way, pulling the rod up “trout set” for these species doesn’t work well so I can will teach you how to do a “strip set”.

What sort of fish will you catch during your adventure? We can go after bonefish, tarpon, redfish, permit, snook (on the flats and close to shore), barracuda, the list is endless. Remember this type of fishing is very different from the fishing that you may have done in fresh water. It’s the availability of big fish in saltwater which makes it more challenging as well as way more exciting for anglers.

Keep in mind that the equipment and the strategies will differ. We will be using heavier rods, dealing with stronger winds, moving currents, and just bigger fish. I will help you learn all of the adjustments that you will have to do during the trip, but if you are an experienced angler…well we’ll just work hard to get you front of a ton of fish. Practice makes perfect. The fly rod and the reel that you would use to catch fresh water fish will not work when you want to catch big fish like tarpon, but don’t worry, all the gear is provided. We have the big reels, and the perfect fly rods for your adventure. Hope to see you real soon!

Thanks,
Captain Brian
